If you are looking for a dive bar with unbelievable character, the Fat Pelican is the place for you. The menu is basic - beer (over 200 to choose from in the back cooler) and wine. The people, mostly locals, are very friendly and make you feel right at home. There is an awesome jukebox which allowed me to play an eclectic mix of my favorites - from Peter Frampton, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack Johnson, Otis Redding, Queen and many many others. If you're in Carolina Beach and want to have a fun evening after dinner - head out to the Fat Pelican!!
I have to say, and I've seen a lot of dive bars around the world, I think this is perhaps the best bar I've visited.
You have the overwhelming sense of "Who the F are you?... We'll come on in. We don't care."
And the rolling floors of homemade concrete are fantastic.
I went the coffee shop next door last time I was there. Just before I was taking pics of the Pelican. The girl running the coffee shop told me "I don't even drink and I go there nightly."
