We visited from out-of-state with friends to celebrate our anniversary. The service was simply OK but the mixed drinks and food were pretty awful. Out of the four different meals that we ordered not one was enjoyable. In fact, there are so many other fine restaurants to choose from that we won't be back. The George needs to look at it's chef when so many meals are poorly done. I wish that we had gone elsewhere for this special occasion.
I went with some friends for a GNO. The view was lovely, but the service and food were not. The Chicken Marsala was odd and the consistency of the marsala was like the McRibb and the taste was seriously off. When this was mentioned to the server he quipped " were you expecting Carrabas?!". I should have told him that although I am not a fan of chains, they would not have served anything that terrible. They charged full price even though it was inedible and uneaten and did not offer another entree. We promptly left after dinner and ate dessert at Elijah's. Which, as always, was super.
I was in Wilmington last weekend to move my daughter into UNCW. I wanted to take her and my other kids to dinner on the Historic Waterfront. We chose The George. I was very impressed with the service and menu. My kids are picky eaters and all three picked out a delicious entree and were very pleased. I suffer from Lou Gerhigs Disease and can not eat solid food. Only soups. The soup selections were both great, but what caught my eye was the Salmon and Corn Chowder. Since I have to drink my soup from a cup the waitress served me in a coffee cup which was perfect. She made sure I had plenty and we all left full. Everyone was pleased. I will tell my friends. We are returning in September for a wedding and will eat again at The George. The Grist Family.
Dear Mr Kinchen,
It seams as though Bobby wrote that recently. I don't disagree with his position and it appears to have nothing to do with this year. I have eaten there off and on for the last 4-5 yrs but had not been there in about a year. My wife and I had dinner at your restaurant two weeks ago and I really hate to tell you this but we probabaly won't be back. I mean the attmosphere was ok but the staff was a little bit rude. Our food was skimpy and not worth the price. The restaurant was not busy as it was a weeknight. I was a repeat customer but I am not sure I'll be back. Sorry but I have to write our experience.
I really wish you all the best of luck for the future as it is a great location.
To the poster that suggested the owner wrote the review, you are half right. My girlfriend worked there for a while and said she was asked to use her email accounts to write good reviews. I got to know several of her friends that also worked there and they all said the same. And seeing as 'foodlover' of whatever the name basically repeated the same thing mentioned in Encore ads and the current selling point to redefine the place, yep you are most likely correct that these praising post(s) are indeed inside generated. I mean come on, the place is a joke among year round residents. The one common factor, as stated in posts by tourists and "posters" is the Cape Fear River. It's a lovely river, and it sets downtown perfectly, but come on: a strong place needs more than a body of water to be it's only positive selling point. And this is my opinon, the food has always sucked, regardless of the view. I'm saying this not to defend my girlfriend, but to be honest.
Dear Bobby,
I am sorry that you have a negative perception of The George. I cannot vouch for how the former General Manager did business, but since the change of management last November I can tell you that we do not write our own reviews or ask our employees to write them for us. I do not know who these year-round residents you speak of are but as far as the Executive Director of the Battleship Commission and the Foundation Board of CFCC are concerned we are worth coming back to time and again. I would strongly encourage you and your girlfriend to come visit The George since its transformation.
Sincerely,
Josh Kinchen

I read all of the reviews and went prepared to hate it but actually had a great time. Nice atmosphere, upscale but relaxed. The service was great, the food was really good (though no real vegetarian entrees). All of the salad dressings were made in-house and fantastic. Like several reviewers have noted, I also thought it was a little pricey, it wouldn't be a place I could afford to visit casually but for a special occasion (or if you're paying)...count me in! I had a really nice evening!
Three of us had apps on a Thursday night. The service was awful and the food was served cold. That was my third and last time to go to the george
The George has really outdone themselves now! They have completely changed the menu, replacing previously frozen products with all-fresh and homeade! All the fish is fresh, never frozen and the steaks are now top-notch. They also now get their desserts from Dave Herring's Sea Salt Bakery in Hampstead. All these changes are due to new General Manager Douglas Sanders and new Executive Chef Ryan Blackstone. I would recommend them to anyone!
What a wonderful way to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. The food was incredible . . started off with Fried Green Tomatoes that had a topping that made them "top" on my list followed by she crab soup and a wedge salad that was huge. The Filet was cooked perfect as so was our guest were impressed. Our party had 10 people and the wait staff handled all our needs individually without the normal feel of a large party. It was great to sit outside in the cool air and have the heaters keep the warmth and still enjoy the waterfront in the evening. We were so glad to see Douglas back on the waterfront managing this restaurant, his staff always knows how to make any meal special. We will be back soon.
The only thing redeeming about this restaurant is its location. The food is mediocre at best and the service is just ok. I've given it a couple of times to impress me or even make it worth the money, but I won't be going back.
